The 4th Workshop on On-site Domestic Wastewater Treatment in Asia was held in Jakarta

The 4th Workshop on On-site Domestic Wastewater Treatment in Asia was held on 27th - 28th September 2016 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The objective of this workshop is to contribute to further development of decentralized domestic wastewater treatment and to achievement of the SDGs in sanitation in participating countries, through sharing good experiences and building a network of related personnel in Asia.

In this workshop, thirty five participants attended the workshop, including twenty one officers of Indonesian central/local government, four JICA experts in Indonesia, four guest speakers from other countries and six participants from Ministry of the Environment, Japan Sanitation Consortium and National Institute for Environmental Studies etc.

There are three sessions to be conducted with the theme of “Framework of regulation, monitoring and management of decentralized domestic wastewater treatment”, “Challenges and good practices of decentralized domestic wastewater treatment” and “Good practices in septage management in participating countries.” After each session, discussion was carried out and a declaration document was adopted in the end of the workshop.

During the workshop, many questions and comments on the presentation came from participants, and active discussion on on-site domestic wastewater treatment in Asian countries was conducted.

A johkasou site visit was arranged for the participants in the afternoon of 28th September.

Though the presentation and discussion in the workshop, participants got a clear picture of the current conditions and challenges on on-site domestic wastewater treatment in Asian countries, and expect that on-site domestic wastewater treatment will be promoted as a main policy of wastewater management in their country.
