We Held a Workshop on Decentralized Wastewater Treatment in Asia

On 11/20-21, for 2 days, the Ministry of the Environment hosted a workshop on decentralized wastewater treatment in Asia at our education center.

This workshop aims to support the achievement of the MDGs goals related to sanitation in Asian countries, while also addressing 2 important themes: 1) Focusing on the role of decentralized wastewater treatment in dissemination of wastewater treatment, and 2) systems and standards for decentralized wastewater treatment, discussions will be held to share the experiences of each country and gain a common understanding of issues and directions that should be addressed in the future. In addition, the purpose is to build a network of stakeholders in each country and strengthen cooperation toward the promotion of decentralized wastewater treatment in Asia.

At this workshop, from 7 countries (including 1 on paper), 10 people participated, as well as 42 people in Japan from the Ministry of the Environment, the Japan Sanitation Consortium (JSC), and the Johkasou System Association, for a total of 52 people.

On the morning of the first day, the 20th, each country gave a presentation on the current status and issues of on-site sewage treatment, and in the afternoon, presentations were made on on-site systems and standards. After that, a discussion session was held by international and domestic presenters on "What should be done for the appropriate spread of decentralized wastewater treatment systems in Asia".

At the workshop venue, many questions and comments were exchanged between the participants and presenters regarding the content of the presentations, and lively discussions were held on the current status and issues of on-site wastewater treatment in each country.

A reception was held by the Ministry of the Environment at 6 p.m. that day.Mr. Kajiwara, Director of the Waste Management and Recycling Department, Ministry of the Environment, gave a welcome speech to the participants from overseas and those in Japan.

On the following day, overseas participants visited johkasou-related facilities in Japan, including the Yuki factory of Housetech Co., Ltd. and the johkasou installation site in the vicinity, as well as the bio-eco-engineering facility of the National Institute for Environmental Studies.

This workshop was successfully completed.Through this workshop, the issues of on-site wastewater treatment in Asian countries became clearer. In the future, I hope that each country will share information on on-site sewage treatment, cooperate more closely, and promote on-site sewage treatment in order to improve sanitation and protect the water environment in Asia.
