"The #6 Workshop on Decentralized Wastewater Treatment in Asia" was held

On 2018/9/19, the #6 Workshop on Decentralized Wastewater Treatment in Asia hosted by the Ministry of the Environment was held at the World Trade Center Building WTC Conference Center in Hamamatsucho.

Based on the results of the past 5 workshops (2 times in Tokyo, 1 time each in Bangkok, Jakarta, and Myanmar), this workshop shared the experiences of Asian countries and shared a common understanding of issues and directions that should be addressed in the future. In addition, the purpose is to build a network of concerned parties in each country and strengthen cooperation toward the further promotion of decentralized wastewater treatment in Asia. Heisei 27/9, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted, and in the water field, Target 6.3 set a major goal of "halving the proportion of untreated wastewater by 2030."

In the future, it is expected that the promotion of decentralized wastewater treatment in Asian countries, and by extension the johkasou system, will be further accelerated toward the achievement of these SDGs.

In this workshop, we called for participation through the general incorporated association johkasou System Association and the general incorporated association Construction Consultants Association, and about 50 people from Japan, including construction consultant companies and johkasou-related companies, participated (including 5 presenters).

In addition, including 38 people from China, about 50 overseas participants (including 7 presenters) participated in the workshop, reaching a total of about 100 participants and making it a very lively workshop. The participation of participants in the 2018 International Water Association (IWA) World Congress and Exhibition, which was held at the same time, is believed to have contributed to the increase in the number of participants in this workshop.

At the opening ceremony of the workshop, Mr. Naoyuki Matsuda, director of the johkasou promotion office of the Ministry of the Environment, who is the organizer of the workshop, gave a speech, explained the purpose of holding the workshop, and expressed his expectations for the success of the workshop.

In the morning session, representatives from each country made presentations on their efforts toward decentralized wastewater treatment under the title of "Current Situation and Policies of Sewage Treatment." The discussion focused on the "performance evaluation test".

Opinions were expressed not only from the panelists representing each country, but also from the floor, and a lively discussion developed. There were many participants from overseas, including the participants of the IWA conference, indicating the high level of interest in decentralized wastewater treatment.

Finally, we would like to thank Kiyofumi Kawamura (former professor at Saitama University), Kazushi Hashimoto (Advisor, Japan Sanitation Consortium), Yoshitaka Ebie (Senior Researcher, National Institute for Environmental Studies), who chaired each session. Mr. Kumokawa from the Center reviewed the content of each session, proposed a workshop summary, and closed the session. This workshop summary was later shared with the invitees from each country, and the content was approved.

Mr. Yang Min (Deputy Director, Center for Eco-Environmental Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences), a participant from China, commented that it is important to create opportunities for further networking, and that he expects more such workshops to be held in the future. had.In addition, Dr. Viet Anh Nguyen, who was invited from Vietnam, said that he would like to hold the next workshop in Vietnam and lead to the spread of decentralized wastewater treatment in the country.

The next workshop, "The 7th Workshop on Decentralized Wastewater Treatment in Asia" will be held in Vietnam in September 2019.
